This is a personal project that I’ve been planning for quite some time, and will be part of my demo-reel. Being aware of the amount of work ahead of me, the hours spent, and considering this will last for only a few seconds on the video, I decided to go ahead and model with all there is to it, starting on concepts, then on a simple but functional Basemesh, refining it on ZBrush, Multipass rendering and post-production in Photoshop.

It is all part of the pipeline on character development, and there are many other steps in Maya that weren’t necessary on this case, such as rigging for animating the model as a digital puppet, blend shapes that form the face expressions, and all the animation process with timeline, manipulation of animation curves, trax, etc. After going through all these steps, there’s still rendering, post production, sound editing, final edition, etc.

This is such a demanding, long lasting and complex process, that animation studios and producers have groups of professionals, specially trained for each part of the process, and a 30 second TV ad can easily take 12 hours – or more – a day of a hard working staff, for about a couple of months.

Heavy stuff, but extremely gratifying, and considering the investment on mastering all techniques involved, this kind of job is often well payed.

Let’s get to the point, Obama’s making of.

Step 1

It all starts on the model sheet, a basic planning on how the figure will be modeled, usually drawn from the front and one side.

Step 2

Over the model sheets I started modeling the basemesh, using ZSpheres on ZBrush.

Step 3

During the mesh edition in Modo, even though I liked the results on the body, I still was not satisfied with the head.

Step 4

I decided to make another model sheet, more on the caricature side, a bit exaggerated, exploring to a higher extent the character features, trying to avoid the trap that exists halfway between realistic and cartoony styles.

Step 5

Following the new drawing, I repositioned the vertices on the low poly mesh, and kept on modeling the skin with pores and expression marks, based on reference photos.

Step 6

With the modeling finished, I used the polygonal painting feature on ZBrush, as if I was painting straight on clay, instead of creating a bitmap texture, that would then require UVs, displacement and bump maps, in a more elaborate process, usually required in an animation, but unnecessary on this case, because the final rendering is done straight on ZBrush, using a multi-pass rendering technique. This kind of rendering has no SSS – Sub Surface Scattering – that is the natural translucency on human flesh and semi opaque objects, effect created with the use of more powerful rendering engines, such as Mental Ray, VRay and others, that would eventually bring more realism to the figure, but for this personal project the result fulfilled my expectations.

I may eventually go through the other steps, and do a short animation with this Obama model, and that’s the reason why I took the time to modeling the hands, and keeping in mind that all the work done this far may be deformed and reused in other characters, saving some time and handwork in the future.

Many different render passes are generated on the same position, edited in Photoshop, each one with its own blend mode and transparency, exploring as much as possible the effects of light, shadow, volumetry and depth of field, as it would be done in a photographic studio.

Last night I was watching TV and decided to create an image for a Christmas tutorial. I was willing to work a little bit more with Cinema 4D, and as I have seen some Christmas designs with candy canes, I decided to try and design my own candy cane typeface. I also used Photoshop to create the background and the whole composition.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create a 3D text in Cinema 4D, then in Photoshop we will import the .3DS file and play with it using the Photoshop 3D capabilities. We will also play with some filters, brushes and blend modes to create the effect.

The whole process will take a few hours, and this tutorial is more like a case study then a tutorial per se, I will show you some details of how I created the image but I really encourage you to try different values and elements as well.

Step 1

The first thing to, actually, was to create the font. I created this font in Illustrator using my laptop’s trackpad, it’s not very complicated it’s all about adjusting the points after you have a rough version. So I saved the AI file in Illustrator as AI version 8, that way I would be able to open it in Cinema 4D.

Now, in Cinema 4D, go to File>Open and open the .AI file.

Step 2

After you have imported the path in Cinema 4D we will need to extrude the path to create our 3D text. The first thing to do is to add a circle spline that will be the shape of our object.

Go to Objects>Spline Primitive>Circle. Then go to Objects>Nurbs>Sweep Nurbs. You will have the Sweep Nurbs object, the circle and the paths in your Objects Panel. Move the circle and one of the paths into the Sweeb NURBS object. The circle has to be on top of the path. That’s it, you will have a nice 3D extrusion. You can resize the circle in order to make the 3D oject thinner.

Step 3

Repeat the same thing for the other paths of the word “xmas”

Step 4

Over the Materials Panel, add a new material, go to File>New Material. Then select the color settings. For the texture I created a material that is a red and white stripe. You can download all files in the end of the tutorial.

Step 5

Just drag the material you have created over the objects to apply it to them. Now click on the Texture Tag, next to the object on the Objects Panel and then you will see the tag properties. Change the Title Y to 10 for the letters “x”, “a” and “s”. for the “m” use 30 because it’s wider than the others.

After that go to File>Export and export the file as .3ds. That way we will be able to play with the 3D features in Photoshop, if you have the CS4 Extended.

Step 6

In Photoshop, create a new document, I used 1920×1200 pixels for the size. After that fill the background layer with a dark red (#4d2828). Then go to 3D>New Layer from 3D file… select the .3ds file you have saved from Cinema 4D.

Once imported you will be able to rotate, scale and move the 3D object in a 3D space in Photoshop. Also if you double click on the 3D layer in the Layer Panel you will have the 3D settings.

Step 7

Double click on the material option of the 3D layer in the Layer Panel. Photoshop will open a new document with the texture, make sure you have the white and red stripe texture used in Cinema 4D, if not import it and just save it. The texture will be applied again. Tip: You can create new textures and apply to the object in Photoshop as well.

Step 8

Below you can see the 3D options you have in Photoshop.

Change the Anti-Alias to Best and then duplicate the 3D layer. Hide one of the layers so we can use it later if necessary. With the other layer go to Layer>Rasterize>3D. We will do that because Photoshop gets too slow when working with 3D layers.

Step 9

Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 1 pixel for the Radius.

Step 10

Now let’s add some layer styles. Go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow, use the image below for the values. You will also apply Bevel and Emboss and Satin.

Step 11

With the layer styles applied to the layer, go to Image>Adjustment>Levels. Change the middle input to 1.68. The rest stays the same.

Step 12

Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Saturation to -10 and increase the Lightness to 10.

Step 13

After all these steps, this is the image you will have. Duplicate it and disable the shadow.

Step 14

With the duplicated copy selected, it will be on top, go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Amount.

Step 15

After the Gaussian Blur, go to Image>Adjustmetns>Hue and Saturation. Select Colorize and then move the Hue to 0, the Saturation to 54 and the Lightness to -35. Also change the Blend Mode to Screen.

Step 16

To create the background we will use a new brush preset. Select the Brush Tool (B) and go to Window>Brushes. Select a regular brush shape. We will use Shape Dynamics and Scattering to create our brush preset. Use the image below for the values.

Step 17

Over the Layer Panel, add a new group. Change the Blend Mode of the group to Color Burn. Inside this group add a new layer. With the Brush Tool (B) and the brush you have just created, select black for the color and paint some circles. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 40 pixels for the Radius. Also, change the layer’s Opacity to 60%.

Step 18

Add another layer inside the group. Again with the Brush Tool (B) and black paint more circles. This time however make them a little bigger. Use the keyboard shortcuts to “]” make the brush bigger or “[" to make it smaller. Reduce the layer's Opacity to 60%. Also, go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 20 pixels for the Radius.

Step 19

Now, add another group in the layer panel. Change the Blend Mode of this new group to Color Dodge. Create a new layer inside of the group and with the Brush Tool (B), select white for the color and paint some circles. Make sure that they are not blurry. To change the hardness of the brush, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + ]. Also reduce the layer’s Opacity to 30%.

Step 20

Add another layer and paint some more circles, bigger this time. Also go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 40 pixels for the Radius. After that change the Opacity to 20%.

Step 21

Repeat the last step, this time however use 40% for the Opacity.

Step 22

Add another layer and reduce the size of the brush, the idea is to create some very small particles. Also, make sure that the brush is very soft, or go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur to soften the effect.

Step 23

With the Direct Type Tool (T), create a new layer with some text. I searched on the internet for some Christmas songs. Use a small font size and paste the lyrics. Paste as many time as necessary so the text covers the vertical size of the design.

For the font, I used a handwriting typeface. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 1.5 for the Radius. For the Opacity use 35%.

Step 24

Add another text layer with the Direct Type Tool (T) and paste the lyrics again. This time use a bigger font size. Also, go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 1.5 pixels for the Radius. After that change the Opacity to 45%. Use the image below for reference of positions.

Step 25

Now add the word “Merry”, right on top of the “m”. Repeat pretty the same thing we did in the previous step, but use a much bigger font.

Step 26

Add a new layer on top of the others then with the Brush Tool (B) and a very soft brush, select black for the color and reduce the opacity to 50%.

Start painting the edges of the document. The idea is to make the edges really dark and to leave only the center iluminated. You can apply a gaussian blur to soften the effect even more.

Step 27

Just add your logo and then select all layers.

Duplicate them and with the copies selected go to Layer>Merge Layers. You also can use the keyboard shortcut to create a layer with all the layers merged. It’s Command(mac) or Control (PC) + Alt + Shift + E.

Step 28

Select the Gradient Tool (G) and create a new gradient. For the colors use black, white and black. Use the image below for reference.

Step 29

With the merged layer selected go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. Fill the layer mask with the gradient you have just created, exaclty like the image below. Also you can see how the layers are organized.

Step 30

Go to Filter>Blur>Lens Blur. Use the image below for the values. You will use the layer mask as source for the Depth Map of the lens blur. After you applied the lens blur, click with the right button of the mouse on the layer and disable the layer mask.

Step 31

Duplicate the Layer and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur, use 4 pixels for the Radius.

Change the Blend Mode to Screen and the Opacity to 15%. That will make the effect a little bit brighter.

Conclusion

You can add some noise in the end just to add a nice printed feel to the image.

For this image we used basic filters and the brush tool, we also applied some of the techniques I have shown you during this year like for the 3D effect in Cinema 4D, it was the same I used to create the Water Text Effect, or the background of this design that is basically a bokeh effect.

The idea of the tutorials is to learn some techniques and not simply the end result we get, because the important thing is that you know how to create some effects and then will be able to apply them in different situations.

I hope you like the tutorial and I wish you a Merry Christmas.

In this tutorial you will learn how to create a complex (around 600,000 polygons) abstract Greeble scene without getting into too much modeling. Loft NURBS, Sweep NURBS, Formula object, Structure tools, and Visible light will be used to create the scene, and Advanced Render will be applied to generate the final image. You will also learn some cool tricks on how to tweak the final rendered image, by modifying the visible light, and adding glare and depth of field in Photoshop.

Final Effect Preview

Click Here to Open a High Rez Version

Step 1

Create a Plane object (Objects > Primitive > Plane) 800 x 800 m and 80 x 80 segments.

Step 2

Create a Formula object (Objects > Deformation > Formula) and drag it under the Plane object.

Step 3

Move the Formula object near to the edge of the Plane object.

Step 4

In the Attributes of the formula object, modify d (u,v,x,y,z,t) to something that you like, but keep the formula wavy. I used “Sin((u)*2.0*pi)*0.2*((u+v)*0.3)”.

Step 5

Move and rotate the Plane object slightly. I used -2, -6.5, and -27 for x, y and z, and -4, 13, and 18 for h, p, and b.

Step 6

Make the Plane object editable (Functions > Make Editable) and tweak the Plane using the move, scale and rotate tools with soft selection enabled. Note: For soft selection set a big radius (roughly 400 to 600 m) so you can tweak many polygons while keeping just a few selected.

Step 7

Select all polygons (ctrl+a) and extrude them (Structure > Extrude) with an offset around 10 m, Var. 100%, and the “Preserve Groups” option unchecked.

Step 8

Extrude the selected polygons again with same settings but set the Var. to 140%.

Step 9

Use Extrude Inner (Structure > Extrude Inner) with an offset 1m on the selected polygons, then Extrude them with (Structure > Extrude) an offset of around 2m. Delete the Phong tag if it was assigned.

Step 10

Find a good point of view and add a camera object. Note: I usually add a camera early so I can create my scene around the camera.

Step 11

Create three linear Spline objects (Objects > Create Spline > Linear) around 500m in all axes. Change the Type to Cubic.

Step 12

Create three Circle objects (Objects > Spline Primitive > Circle), with a radius of 40m, then create three SweepNURBS objects. Drag pairs of Circle objects and Spline objects into the SweepNURBS objects.

Step 13

Select all three Spline objects and change the Intermediate Points to Uniform, and the Number to 16. Select all three Circle objects and change the Intermediate Points to Adaptive, and the Angle to 30 (all these numbers & angles may vary from spline to spline). You need this step to make most of the SweepNURBS polygons square-shaped. For all SweepNURBS objects, change the Caps option to None at both the Start and the End.

Step 14

Make all of the SweepNURBS editable (C on keyboard). Select all of the polygons and Extrude them an Offset of 10m, a Var. at 90%, and Preserve Groups unchecked. Use Extrude Inner on the selected polygons with an Offset of 3.5m, and then Extrude selected with a negative Offset of around 6m. Delete the Phong tag.

Step 15

Move the SweepNURBS behind the Extruded plane.

Step 16

Create an Akima spline (Objects > Create Spline > Akima) around 1500m high, duplicate it, and move it to create some sort of arc.

Step 17

Create a Loft NURBS object, and add both the Akima splines to it. Tweak Mesh Subdivision U and Mesh Subdivision V to make the polygons square (30 x 20 should do).

Step 18

Make the Loft NURBS editable, select all of the polygons, and reverse the normals (Functions > Reverse Normals). Delete the Phong tag.

Step 19

Extrude selected polygons (Offset around 100m, Var. 100%, Preserve Groups unchecked), use Extrude Inner on selected polygons (Offset 10m), extrude selected with Offset around -20m, Var ~90%.

Step 20

Duplicate the Loft NURBS, move both objects behind all of the others, move up one of Loft NURBS objects slightly.

Step 21

Create a Spline object above the plane, use B-Spline Type, with Intermediate Points as Subdivided and values of around 2 for Angle and Maximum Length.

Step 22

Create a Circle object with a Radius of 10m, Intermediate Points as Adaptive, and an Angle of 15. Create a SweepNURBS object, and drag the Circle and B-Spline objects under it.

Step 23

Create another B-spline with Intermediate Points as Subdivided, an Angle of 2, and a Maximum Length of 2m.

Step 24

Duplicate the SweepNURBS object from step 22 and replace the spline object with the newly created one.

Step 25

Select both SweepNURBS objects and make them editable. Delete caps.

Step 26

Select all polygons in both splines, and Extrude them with an Offset of 3m, Var. at 100%, and Preserve Groups unchecked. Use Extrude Inner on selected polygons with an Offset of around 0.3m, then Extrude them again with an Offset of -1m and Var. at 100%.

Step 27

Create a Sphere object (Objects > Primitive > Sphere) with a Radius of 50m, Segments at 34, and Type set to Hexahedron. Position it above the Plane and Sweeps.

Step 28

Make the Sphere object editable, select all of the polygons, and Extrude them with an Offset of 10m, Var. at 90%, and Preserve Groups unchecked. Use Extrude Inner on selected polygons with an Offset of 1.5m, and then Extrude them again with an Offset of around 4m. Delete the Phong tag.

Step 29

Time to set some environment parameters. Create a Sky object (Objects > Scene > Sky).

Step 30

Create two Light objects with Colors of orange and grey-orange, Intensity of 70%, Type set to Spot, Shadow set to Area, and Visible Light set to Volumetric. Under Visibility, set the Outer Distance very high so it will go through plane object.

Step 31

Create a Cube object (Objects > Primitive > Cube), and scale it up so it will cover the Plane and the two Sweeps. This Cube will be used to hide some areas of the scene from illumination.

Step 32

Make the Cube object editable, and select and delete some polygons. Assign a Composition tag (right-click in Object Manager, Cinema 4D Tags > Compositing) and uncheck the Seen by Camera option.

Step 33

Now you need some materials. Create a new material (double click in the material manager). Double click on the material to open the material editor.

Step 34

Under Color, set the Brightness to 89%, and the Gradient as Texture. Under the Gradient Properties, set the Gradient to light orange and light blue colors, the Type to 2D-V, and Turbulence to 38%. Uncheck Specular and assign the material to the Sky object.

Step 35

Create a new material and set its Color to white. Leave Specular as is, and assign this material to the Plane and both Loft NURBS.

Step 36

Create a new material and set the Color as dark grey, and Brightness to 75%.

Step 37

Under Reflection set the Brightness to 60%, use Fresnel as Texture, and set Mix Mode to Multiply.

Step 38

Under Specular, set the Mode to Colored, Width to 91%, Height to 49%, Falloff to 3%, and Inner Width to 25%.

Step 39

For Specular Color, set the Brightness to 350%, and the Mix Mode to Multiply. Use Lumas (Effects > Lumas) as the Texture, and under the Lumas settings uncheck Active at Shader. For Specular 1, 2, & 3 change only the Color to light grey. For Anisotropy check Active, and set Projection to Planar.

Step 40

Assign this material to the three Sweep NURBS in the back.

Step 41

Create a Danel shader (in the Material Manager click File > Shader > Danel). Under Diffuse change the Color to grey.

Step 42

For Specular 2, change the Color to light grey.

Step 43

For Specular 3, change the Color to blue (67, 130, 169), the Intensity to 60%, the Size to 60%, the Glare to 90%, and the Fallof to 39%.

Step 44

For Reflection, change the Intensity to 15%, and the Edge Intensity to 45%.

Step 45

Check Anisotropy, set the Projection to Shrink Wrap, and check Specular 3.

Step 46

Assign this material to both of the SweepNURBS at the front.

Step 47

Duplicate the Danel shader material, and for Diffuse change the Color to bright orange (219, 116, 0).

Step 48

For Specular 2, change the Color to light orange, and for Specular 3, change the Color to orange. Select all other parameters by clicking on them while holding Shift, then right-click and choose Reset to Default.

Step 49

For Anisotropy change the Projection to Planar, and uncheck Specular 3.

Step 50

Assign this material to the Sphere.

Step 51

Add compositing tags to all of the objects except the lights, the Sky object, the Camera Object, and the Cube that already has a compositing tag assigned to it. Enable Object Buffer for all of the Compositing tags. Note: Make sure you set a unique buffer number for each object (1 for plane, 2 for first Sweep NURBS and so on). This will help you get rid of errors in the render if they occur.

Step 52

Open the Render Settings (Render > Render Settings…). Under Output, set the Width and Height to your requirements (I used 2400 x 1800 at 300 DPI). Under Save check Save in Multi-Pass Image. For Multi-Pass include Diffuse, Reflection, Global Illumination, Atmosphere, Depth, Illumination, and all Object Buffers. Also, change Separate Lights to All, and change Anti-Aliasing to Best.

Step 53

Add a Global Illumination effect. Under General, set the GI Mode to IR + QMC (Still Image), and change the Diffuse Depth to 2. Under Irradiance Cache, change the Cache Refinement to Medium, the Oversampling to Medium, and check Distance Map. Render.

Step 54

Open the rendered file in Photoshop.

Step 55

In both light groups duplicate the Specular layer.

Step 56

Duplicate the Atmosphere layer three times and merge the copies. Use the Smudge tool, Blur tool, and Surface Blur (Filter > Blur > Surface Blur) to blend the colors of visible light.

Step 57

Duplicate the Illumination layer and drop it above all of the other layers. Change the Blend mode to Soft Light, and the Opacity to 50%.
